Common Concerns for Individual Therapy
Working Through Sexual Trauma
Sex can be a wonderful, pleasurable, and amazing experience. However, in its worst moments, it can also be used as a tool for manipulation, pain, and hurt. According to RAINN (The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), Every 74 seconds someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. On top of that, every nine minutes, that someone is a child. Let me first say, no matter what age you may have experienced sexual trauma, it should not have happened. No matter what you were wearing, no matter how you were acting, and regardless if you had taken any kind of substances, you did not deserve that. I am here to support survivors no matter where they are on their journey.
Common reactions after these experiences may include emotional shock, disbelief, denial, embarrassment, fear, shame, guilt, anxiety, depression, powerlessness, hypersexuality, anger, or disorientation. For some, just reading this may bring a pit in their stomach. Maybe you find yourself numb and struggling to connect with others in ways you could previously, or maybe you’re feeling every emotion… like, all the time. Maybe you have no time to even think about what happened because you’re too busy keeping it together for yourself and others. No matter where you’re at I believe you, I see you, and your story matters. Together we will take things at your pace to increase self-worth, help manage all the emotional experiences that may or may not come with trauma, and take back your power.
Queer Identity Exploration/Development
Understanding your identity can be an exciting, freeing, confusing, and sometimes overwhelming process. For many queer folks, figuring out who you are doesn’t happen in a neat, linear way. Maybe you’re questioning your sexuality or gender and aren’t sure what label (if any) fits. Maybe you’ve known for a long time but are still figuring out what it means for your relationships, family, faith, or future. Or maybe you’re out in some parts of your life but not others, constantly navigating when it feels safe to share that part of yourself.
Growing up in environments that were not always affirming can make this process even more complicated. Many people carry messages about what they “should” be, who they’re “supposed” to love, or how they’re “meant” to exist in the world. Those messages can create confusion, shame, or self-doubt—even when a part of you knows who you are. Therapy can be a space to slow down and sort through all of that without needing to censor yourself or worry about being judged. Wherever you are in the process—questioning, newly out, or years into living authentically—you deserve a space where your identity is respected, affirmed, and allowed to evolve.Therapy for Therapists
Finding the right fit of a therapist can be hard, and when you’re a therapist yourself… it can be even harder. I’ve been to plenty of therapists who’s only intervention seems to be asking, “Now what would you tell a client in this situation?” Of course our job puts us in a unique position to know a lot about relational patterns and coping skills, but that does not mean we have it all figured out. Therapists need therapists, too. When working with clinicians I often focus on who you are outside of being a helper, processing and working through vicarious trauma, and validating all parts of you… especially those that are messy, uncertain, and undeniably human. I enjoy working with therapists on all different parts of their career path. Some of my clients are in the graduate school process, or freshly out of it. Some have been in the field for years, while others are slowly finding their footing in their newly opened practice. Whether you’re dealing with our old friend imposter syndrome, struggling to navigate the broken systems we work and live within, or simply wanting a nonjudgmental space to explore how your intersecting identities impact your work, I would love to be a part of your journey.
